Local graduate traveling to UK to further education

Staff Reports

A Franklin Community High School graduate will be traveling to the UK as a part of a scholarship program.

Emma Beavins will be attending the University of Bristol with 10 other students for a four-week program focusing on arts and activism, something she says she is hoping to incorporate into her future career.

During her course, Beavins said she will be learning about how arts, such as literature and music, have shaped social justice movements across the globe, with a particular focus on racial justice and the legacies of slavery. She will also be attending workshops with artists to receive hands-on experience.

Because of its position on the River Avon, Bristol developed into one of the major trading ports in Britain and played a big role in the transatlantic slave trade because of this, according to discoveringbristol.org

This, Beavins said, is something that she is looking forward to learning about.

She will earn three credit hours at Butler University as a part of her trip. The trip will include lectures, seminars, projects and hands-on workshops with community partners in Bristol’s arts and volunteer organizations.

As an English major and an activist for various groups and causes, Beavins said she hopes the trip will help her figure out how to combine the two.

“I’m hoping to get some sort of ideas how to write about social justice,” Beavins said. “I hope it will guide me to where I’m going to go with my writing.”
