Greenwood man arrested after dog starves to death in his home

A Greenwood man was arrested and police are looking for a second suspect after a dog starved to death in a Greenwood home.

Michael S. Setser, 31, 385 S. Windmill Trail, Greenwood was arrested on a charge of animal neglect. He was taken to the Johnson County jail and released on $250 bond.

Police are also charging Amanda Setser, 28, with cruelty to an animal in connection with the dog’s death. Amanda Setser has not been arrested, but a criminal charge has been filed. A warrant has been issued for her arrest, according to court records.

On Jan. 17, Johnson County Animal Control received a tip that a dog had recently died of starvation in a home in the 4300 block of West County Line Road in Greenwood. The person told police that Michael Setser called Amanda Setser and told her that the dog had died, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

Amanda Setser met animal control at the residence and they saw a dog who was dead in a kennel. The animal control worker later told police that there was no water in the kennel and that the kennel was on a vent where heat was blowing and that food was scattered in the kennel, according to the report.

A veterinarian determined that the cause of death was starvation.

Amanda Setser told police that she had moved out of the residence about Jan. 7 and that she checked that the dog had food and water before she left. Five days later, she went to the residence and the dog was silent and she told police she assumed the dog was asleep, the report said.

She later told police that she had moved out of the home and that Michael Setser was likely staying at a relative’s home and that she did not know who may be taking care of the animal, according to the report.

A witness had offered to care for the animal, but Michael Setser told her to leave, the report said.
