Man run over, vehicles struck

A man was run over and several vehicles damaged in a Franklin neighborhood on Friday evening.

The man who was hit, Rex Murphy, of Franklin, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said. The suspect, Dillon Ray Baker, 18, was arrested. Baker does not get along with Murphy, witnesses told police, and the two had recently argued.

The incident happened inside a mobile home community at 1199 Hospital Road about 7 p.m. Friday.

Baker, who listed an address in South Carolina, was arrested on charges of battery resulting in serious bodily injury, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, criminal mischief and illegal possession of alcohol by a minor. He ran over Murphy when he was walking his dog, and Murphy flipped through the air, a witness told police. He ran over Murphy and then crashed into three other vehicles, the report said.

One witness said that Baker commented that his life was over because he had just tried to kill a person, the report said.

Another witness said that Baker tried to attack Murphy as he was laying injured, called him a name and said he would kill him, police said. Baker said he didn’t make those comments.

Murphy was taken to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital. His wrist was dislocated and fractured, his knee was dislocated, and a bone in his arm was fractured.

Baker told police that he had been enraged about exchanges with Murphy and his fiancee, and that he accelerated quickly and never tried to slow down. He said he wanted to confront Murphy, but never meant to hit him.

An Indiana State Police accident reconstruction specialist was called to the scene.

Baker was held at the Johnson County jail on $6,500 bond.
