A Columbus man was arrested after police said he called employees and a diner of a Mexican restaurant in Edinburgh racial slurs and attempted to grab a police officer’s Taser.

Benjamin Arthur Brown, 49, 5620 E. County Road 800N, was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct, public intoxication and disarming a law enforcement officer.

An Edinburgh police officer was called to the restaurant at 4:39 p.m. Friday on a report that a man was causing issues, according to a probable cause affidavit.

A woman told police that she went into the restaurant to order when Brown called her and all the restaurant employees racial slurs, the affidavit said.

The woman was afraid Brown was going to become violent and asked the restaurant manager to call police. Brown drew back his fist like he was going to hit someone, according to the affidavit.

An officer attempted to speak with Brown about what happened. Brown cursed at police and became aggressive. He grabbed an officer’s Taser and refused to walk and cooperate once he was arrested. He also continued to make threats toward an officer, the affidavit said.

Brown refused a portable breath test, but an officer smelled alcohol on his breath and he had red eyes and slurred speech, according to the affidavit.

He was taken to the Johnson County Jail, where he was held on $4,300 bond.
