Police investigating theft at bail bonds company

A resident who saw people acting suspiciously and followed them led police to the suspects in a break-in at a local bail bonds company.

Two people were arrested, and police are looking for a third suspect, according to reports from the Franklin Police Department.

The incident began on Thursday evening at Angie Mardis Bail Bonds, 800 W. Jefferson St. An employee called police to report that a safe which contained money was taken from the business about 5:30 p.m., a report said.

Minutes after the safe was taken, a resident called police to report people acting suspiciously and damage to a shed on Fairgrounds Street, located near the bail bonds location.

Police believe the man was trying to store the stolen safe at the barn, the report said. The cash was still inside when police recovered it, the report said.

The resident who followed the suspects told police where they had gathered, and a male ran from the scene when police arrived, the report said. As of Friday afternoon, he had not been found.

Two females, Kelly M. Cox, 18, of 8995 W. Del Char North Drive, Edinburgh, and Rachel R. Warner, 18, of Indianapolis, initially were given a courtesy ride from the area by police officers. They had told police they didn’t know the identity of the man who ran, the report said.

But police looked at surveillance video from a gas station, and saw the three together. When questioned again, they told police they did know the man.

Cox and Warner were each arrested on a charge of false informing. Cox was arrested on an additional charge of theft.

Cox was held at the Johnson County jail on $4,000 bond; Warner was released on $1,000 bond.
