Suspected shoplifters struck witnesses, mall employees with vehicle, police said

Two women were arrested after they attempted to steal more than $4,000 in merchandise from a mall department store, pepper sprayed an employee and hit two people with their car, police said.

Tina R. Rabiu, 44, was arrested on a charge of robbery, and Dominique C. Sheridan, 29, was arrested on charges of theft and criminal recklessness, according to a police report. Both are Indianapolis residents.

Several department store employees, including a security officer, and witnesses tried to stop Rabiu and Sheridan during the incident at the Greenwood Park Mall on Saturday afternoon. Employees said the two women were acting suspicious in the store before walking out with several cart fulls of stolen items just after 1 p.m., the report said.

When employees and witnesses confronted them at their car, the two women began throwing items into the backseat, the police report said. Rabiu pepper sprayed one employee who tried to stop her, police said.

In the process of trying to get away, Sheridan backed up the vehicle, running over another employee’s ankle with the front left tire. That’s when a witness stood in front of the car in an effort to stop the women from driving away. Sheridan struck the person with the vehicle, carrying them on the hood of the car for about nine feet, according to the report.

She later told officers people “got in front of her car when she was attempting to get away,” police said.

Paramedics checked everyone who was injured during the incident at the scene and released them, the report said.

An off-duty officer who was patrolling at the mall spotted the car speeding in the mall parking lot and pulled it over, according to the report.

Rabiu, of 2053 S. Meridian St., is being held in the Johnson County jail on $16,000 bond. Sheridan, of 2048 N. Euclid Avenue, is being held on $2,400 bond.
