Man arrested after chase in Franklin

Daily Journal staff reports

A Franklin man was arrested after police said he led multiple police agencies on a high speed chase through Franklin late Sunday.

Kevin C. Swift, 32, 20 Lochry Court, was arrested on charges of restricted use of a drug injection device, resisting law enforcement, possession of paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance and an unrelated warrant.

A Franklin police officer stopped Swift’s vehicle about 11 p.m. Sunday after he made a right turn off of Main Street and on to Jefferson Street on a red light, which is prohibited, according to a report from the Franklin Police Department.

Personal information Swift gave to the officer did not list Swift as a valid driver in a state wide system. The officer asked Swift to step out of the vehicle and Swift drove off, causing the officer to have to jump out of the way of the vehicle, the report said.

Swift drove east on Madison Street and north on Crowell Street, disregarding all intersections. Franklin police lost sight of the vehicle at that time, according to the report.

Swift was driving near the intersection of State Road 144 and State Road 44 when two Johnson County sheriff’s deputies saw him.

Swift then drove north on Mauxferry Road to U.S. 31, where he hit stop sticks placed by a sheriff’s deputy, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

He continued north on U.S. 31 in the southbound lanes until he reached South Street in Franklin, where he moved to the northbound lane, the report said.

Swift continued north on U.S. 31 before making a U-Turn on Jefferson Street, going south and driving down an embankment on the west side of U.S. 31, just south of Hospital Road, according to the report.

A sheriff’s deputy ordered Swift to lay on the ground. Swift resisted until the deputy threatened to release his K9, the report said.

Both Swift and a passenger were treated at Johnson Memorial Hospital and then arrested. The passenger was arrested on an unrelated warrant.

Swift was taken to the Johnson County Jail, where he is held without bond.
