Families, volunteers urged to take part in fire safety blitz

Daily Journal staff reports

Franklin families are being asked to participate in an effort this Saturday to install smoke detectors in homes and discuss a fire safety plan.

The effort by the American Red Cross and Franklin Fire Department, with support from the United Way of Johnson County, is planned for Saturday morning at homes north of the Boys & Girls Club, 101 Hurricane St., in downtown Franklin.

The blitz is part of the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign.

Volunteers will knock on doors and ask residents if they can check, replace or install free smoke alarms. Volunteers will also help families determine a safety plan for all members of the household in the event of a fire.

The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Volunteers are needed to drive to the homes, educate families and install smoke alarms. The American Red Cross will provide training and equipment. Volunteers are asked to register in advance and will be paired together in teams.

Anyone interested in volunteering, or any resident interested in scheduling a home check and safety plan at another time, can contact Vanessa Davis at [email protected] or at 317-684-4321.
