Sheriff: Greenwood woman scammed

A Greenwood woman was scammed out of more than $1,000 by a man claiming to work for local law enforcement.

The woman said she received a call just after 3 p.m. on Wednesday at work from a man who said his name was “Captain Rollins” and claimed there was a warrant out for her arrest for failure to appear at jury duty, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

The man told her the call was being recorded and that, if she didn’t want to be arrested, she was to purchase $1,000 in Apple Store gift cards and then go to the sheriff’s office to prove her identity.

The woman purchased $1,000 in gift cards, but was told by the caller that $500 didn’t transfer and she would need to make another $500 purchase. She spent 2 hours on the phone with the man while the transactions were made and confirmed, the report said.

The woman then drove to the sheriff’s office, where deputies informed her that no one by the name “Captain Rollins” works for the department and she was the victim of a scam.
