New facility ready for Center Grove area patients

Treatment has never been closer to home for residents in the Center Grove area needing physical rehabilitation, x-rays, mammograms and other medical care.

At Franciscan Health Stones Crossing, they can see a doctor for joint injuries, women’s health issues and children’s illnesses. If they need immediate treatment, an urgent care center will be open to patients every day.

Franciscan Health unveiled its newest facility today, an 87,000-square-foot multiuse medical complex located in the fast-growing region of White River Township. The facility will house up to 20 physicians offices, laboratory and imaging services and sports medicine specialists.

A rehab center offers them a chance for physical and occupational therapy. A medical spa will provide a more holistic approach to health care, with massage therapy and hydra-facial services.

The new health care center will better meet the needs of existing patients in western Johnson County, as well as serving as an attractive option for people in an area otherwise lacking for medical services, said Dr. James Callaghan, president and CEO of Franciscan Health Central Indiana.

“These are the services we encounter the most demand for, and as we study population health, the diseases and conditions that are prevalent, we’re set up to serve patients living in this area,” he said. “This is a big part of our primary service area, and we wanted to be where our patients need us most of all.”

Patients entering the gleaming new $35 million complex will step into a modern health care facility heavy on natural light and bright, bold colors.

An open central stairwell encased by windows provides an unobstructed view of the Stones Crossing area. Paintings and photographs covering the walls reinforce soothing images.

Whimsical animal artwork populate the pediatric clinic, and each children’s exam room is themed differently, from dinosaurs to fire trucks to trains.

“We certainly wanted to make an inviting atmosphere for patients,” said Dr. Paul Driscoll, executive medical director for Franciscan Physician Network.

One of the more unique offerings in Stones Crossing facility is a medical spa located on the third floor. Patients will be able to receive services such as massage therapy, aromatherapy, body sculpting and hydra-facial treatment, in addition to plastic surgery.

“This is designed with wellness in mind. We can link patients to fitness opportunities and other wellness resources from here,” Callaghan said.

But the layout of the building will also provide for greater flow in checking patients in, getting them treated and allowing them to leave as quickly and comfortably as possible, Driscoll said.

Examination rooms are broken up into pods, allowing attending physicians and nurses to more quickly and easily provide treatment. Spacious exam rooms also allow for family members to sit in on consultations with the doctors.

Kiosks allow for everything from quick check-in to bill paying to greater ease the flow of patients, Driscoll said.

“We specifically designed the treatment areas to enhance patient flow and make it more efficient to them,” he said.

The main floor of the building is dominated by Franciscan ExpressCare, an urgent care center created to treat minor illnesses and injuries. Patients will be able to see physicians to treat health issues in need of immediate care every day from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. The ExpressCare will also feature lab services, physicals for school or sports, electrocardiograms and a full-service occupational medicine clinic.

The ExpressCare provides a more efficient place for area residents to get treated for acute illnesses and non-emergency issues after regular physicians’ hours.

“We wanted to have an option for them for immediate care needs, so that they didn’t need to make a longer drive,” Callaghan said. “Certainly, if they don’t have to go to our ER, which is nine miles from here, it’s more convenient for them.”

Throughout the building, patients will find physician offices for family, pediatric and internal medicine. About 20 providers will be able to operate out of offices in the center, Driscoll said.

Franciscan Health has also built additional spaces into the medical center allowing them to be flexible with the providers they can offer, Driscoll said. This flex space will allow disciplines such as cardiology, orthopedics and rheumatology to treat patients out of the facility part-time, making for a more efficient use of the space, Callaghan said. Those specialists will likely start seeing patients in the coming months.

“If cardiology wants to be here three days a week and rheumatology wants to be here two days a week, they can use the same space and just be here on a different day,” Callaghan said.

Just days before the Stones Crossing facility opened to the public, Dr. Carol Johnson, Dr. Christina Fox and nurse practitioner Debra Beville sorted through boxes and unpacked items in their new pediatrics office.

Paperwork, supplies and records all had to be organized and ready for opening day. The staff was hard at work settling into the space, which was both exciting and challenging at the same time.

“There’s been a lot of packing, a lot of informing patients where we’d be moving to, and getting everything set up,” said Melissa Hasty, practice manager. “But it’s been so exciting. It’s just a beautiful building, and we feel so blessed that we’re the ones who get to move in.”
