Uebersetzig eagerly awaits homecoming

Brooke Uebersetzig grew up 13 miles from Franklin College, but has never set foot inside the Spurlock Center.

Now that she attends school in Wisconsin, she will.

The former Greenwood basketball player is a starting guard for Mount Mary University, a Division III school in Milwaukee. The Blue Angels, who were 8-13 last season, play the Grizzlies on Sunday at 2 p.m. in what will be Mount Mary’s second game of the season.

It is the season opener for Franklin College.

Uebersetzig (pronounced EE-ber-setzig), a 5-foot-3 junior, is her team’s starting point guard — a role she also held down last season while averaging 7.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists. She started at shooting guard as a freshman with norms of 8.3 points and 3.5 boards.

“I have a lot of family and friends who will be there supporting me that normally don’t get a chance to,” said Uebersetzig, whose most ardent fans include parents Dale and Vickie, her twin sister and best friend Bailey, 21, and younger sister Alex, 15.

Other schools that showed interest in Uebersetzig were Albion College and St. Mary-of-the-Woods — both closer destinations than her current location. Nonetheless, she doesn’t second-guess her decision academically (she majors in biology-health sciences) or athletically.

“I like it at Mount Mary. It’s different scenery. Lots of hills. When I came up here on a campus tour I just fell in love with how pretty it is,” Uebersetzig said. “In high school you get to play with the same players for three or four years.

“In college you play with different people and seeing how their skills are compatible with yours.”
