Teen leads police on chase

A 14-year-old driver led a Johnson County Sheriff’s officer on a chase early Monday morning before pulling over. The unnamed juvenile was arrested for resisting arrest and taken to Johnson County Juvenile Detention.

According to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy passed a red Ford F150 truck driving without tail lights on Smith Valley Road west of State Road 135. The deputy turned around to follow the truck, activating his emergency lights to attempt to stop the vehicle.

Instead of pulling over, the driver turned into the Chelsea Terrace subdivision, jumping a curb and accelerating, according to the report.

The deputy followed the truck, which continued through the neighborhood and out around Sugar Creek Elementary School, the report said. The truck continued to weave into subdivisions in the area, striking a cable box along the way and nearly hitting another car when it went into the median on State Road 37, according to the report.

Finally, the juvenile driver pulled into Pinebrook Apartments, on Smith Valley Road east of State Road 135, where he stopped and was arrested.

In addition to the juvenile driver, two females age 15 and 14 were passengers in the truck. They told the deputy they had tried to get the driver to stop, but he would not.

Sheriff’s deputies contacted the driver’s grandfather, who owned the truck. He said he never gave his grandson permission to drive the truck, though he had noticed a second set of keys had been missing prior to Monday morning.
