Former Whiteland soccer player excelling for Grizzlies

Junior midfielder Jordan Thomas is off to a good start for the Franklin College men’s soccer team, with five goals and two assists in the Grizzlies’ first five matches.

Most recently, the former Whiteland player scored the lone goal in Franklin’s 1-0 victory over DePauw, the team’s first win of the young season.

INDIAN CREEK

Senior cornerback James Starks had five tackles and brought back two kickoffs for a total of 20 yards for the Trine football team as it defeated Bluffton, 34-13.

WHITELAND

Taylor senior cross country runner Landry Long placed 22nd in a time of 27:36.2 to help the Spartans finish second as a team at the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational.

Dalton Lowry got the start at tight end for Taylor in its 31-17 home loss to Butler.

Redshirt freshman tackle Tarnjeet Singh started for the Indianapolis football team in its 28-6 victory against visiting Wayne State.

CENTER GROVE

Sophomore Ethan Shepherd shot a final-round 67 to lead the Indiana men’s golf team to a second-place finish at the Fuzzy Zoeller Invitational. Former Trojan teammate and IUPUI senior Austin Crowder tied for 27th with a three-round score of 217.

Stanford sophomore defensive end Jovan Swann came through with five tackles and a pass breakup in the Cardinal’s 17-3 victory against USC.

Marian sophomore linebacker Bailey Bennett had four tackles and recovered a fumble in the Knights’ 51-7 triumph at Robert Morris.

The University of Indianapolis football team rebounded from a season-opening loss with a 28-6 win over Wayne State. Starting sophomore safety Connor Steeb finished with four tackles for the Greyhounds, while sophomore Clay Hadley got the start at right tackle. Defensive back Blake Moran also saw action off the bench.

Junior defensive end Gavin Everett had two tackles, including one for loss, a broke up a pass in Indiana’s 20-16 win over Virginia.

Senior Austin Smogor started at left guard for the St. Francis football squad as it ran its record to 2-0 with a 49-19 win at St. Francis (Illinois).

Western Illinois fullback Max Norris carried the ball five times for 10 yards in a 34-14 loss at Illinois.

Sophomore offensive lineman Parker Ferguson played for Air Force in its 33-27 loss at Florida Atlantic.

Defensive back Sam Bolin had two tackles for the Taylor football team in a 31-17 loss to Butler. Freshman defensive back Tyler Watson and defensive lineman Brad Boswell also played for the Spartans’ defense.

Running back Titus McCoy rushed for 38 yards and a touchdown in Indiana State’s 31-7 loss at Louisville. For the Cardinals, Russ Yeast returned a kickoff for 14 yards.

Junior slot receiver Joey Siderewicz finished with five receptions for 52 yards and a touchdown in Franklin College’s 56-35 loss at Albion.

Junior setter Taylor Hammill helped Middle Tennessee win two of three matches at the Hampton Inn-Vitational in Smithfield, Rhode Island. Hammill ended the tournament with five kills, 37 assists and 10 digs.

Freshman defensive specialist Devynn Merriman produced a total of 14 digs in Indiana State’s three matches to help the Sycamores win their invitational.

Senior Ali Line helped Illinois State win two of three matches at the Cougar Challenge at Washington State University. Line finished with a totals of 25 kills and five digs.

The Denver volleyball squad won all three matches to claim its own Pioneer Showdown. Sophomore defensive specialist Macy Carrabine had 12 digs altogether, including 11 in a 3-0 shutout of St. Peter’s.

FRANKLIN

Sophomore middle blocker Abby Sewell helped Franklin College score wins over Wilmington, Berea and Centre with a total of 31 kills. She followed that with eight kills and three blocks on Wednesday.

Freshman outside hitter Rachel Kinney played in two of Murray State’s three volleyball matches at the UNIWYO Invite in Laramie, Wyoming. She saw action in the Racers’ losses to Arizona State and Wyoming.

GREENWOOD

Taylor’s runner-up placing at the Indiana Wesleyan University cross country Invitational was led by a sixth-place effort from Hunter Smith.

Hanover sophomore receiver Jackson Daugherty had four catches for 97 yards and a touchdown in a 27-18 loss to Thomas More.

Sophomore Ryder Burchett started at right tackle for St. Francis in its 49-19 victory at St. Francis (Illinois).

EDINBURGH

Dakota Sneed started at center for Butler as the Bulldogs offense produced 431 yards of total offense in a 31-17 win at Taylor.

Senior defensive back Elliott Parmer had a tackle in Franklin College’s 56-35 loss at Albion.

RONCALLI

Greenwood resident Samantha Fogg had 11 digs in Indiana’s three matches at the Active Ankle Challenge at Ball State.

Franklin College quarterback Robbie Strader, a Greenwood resident, got playing time for the Grizzlies in their 56-35 loss at Albion.
