Greenwood restaurant damaged in fire

A fire just after midnight Thursday caused fire and smoke damage to the QDOBA Mexican Grill and Mattress Firm near Greenwood Park Mall.

The fire, which started in an office at the restaurant, moved into the storage room and part of the kitchen, Greenwood Fire Department Chief Darin Hoggatt said. Heavy black smoke, which was the result of plastic burning in the storage room, also damaged the Mattress Firm, which is attached to the Mexican restaurant at 795 N. U.S. 31., at the Fry Road intersection.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Bystanders reported the fire at 12:46 a.m. Thursday, Hoggatt said. But they originally thought the smoke was coming from the mattress store.

Several crews battled the fire for more than two hours, Hoggatt said. Both businesses were closed at the time. No injuries were reported.

The QDOBA is expected to remain closed for a while, Hoggatt said.

The Mattress Firm is open. Manager Christian Martin said the fire damaged a door and a few panels on the wall that is shared with the restaurant. The door was being repaired Thursday morning, he said.

"We do have the main doors open because of the smoke smell," Martin said. "But we are open today and we have no plans of closing."
