Faith, city leaders continuing bond with new event

An event later this month will continue the bonds between city government and local church leaders wanting to address the social needs of families in Franklin, and raise money to make the work possible.

Franklin is starting its own annual mayor’s prayer breakfast. The money raised will go to local charitable or nonprofit organizations selected by a group of local ministers, Mayor Steve Barnett said.

The event, which includes a breakfast and a speaker, is Sept. 29 at Compass Park. Business, organizations or families can sponsor a table.

Soon after becoming mayor in 2017, Barnett began meeting with local ministers to talk about how city government and the churches could address the community’s social issues, such as homelessness, hunger and child abuse. The meetings were initiated by the Rev. Andy Kinsey of Grace United Methodist Church and about 10 ministers have regularly attended.

The messages were then carried back to the congregations and youth groups, Barnett said.

The idea for a prayer breakfast was born from those meetings. Any money raised will be given to local charities, Barnett said. The event is meant to further bring the community together on important issues, Barnett said.

The speaker for the event this year is Loren Minnix, president of Warrior’s Hope, a veterans advocacy group. The event was organized by Donald Peek, a local veteran.

Greenwood also conducts an annual mayor’s prayer breakfast, typically held in the spring and organized by the Christian Business Men’s Connection.
