Local rotary club hosting students

The Franklin Rotary Club will sponsor two high school students at the upcoming Rotary Youth Leadership Awards in Bradford Woods.

The event is Oct. 26-28. This three-day retreat will enable participants to gain valuable leadership skills through a variety of outdoor, interactive, experiential learning opportunities. Students will return to their communities better prepared as youth leaders.

Applications are due Sept. 21, and are available by contacting Meg Butcher at [email protected].

The opportunity to complete an application to be considered for participation is open to any high school junior or senior in Johnson County.

Local teachers are finalists for prize

Central Nine Career Center teachers are semifinalists for a prize.

Steve Owen and Andrice Tucker teach automotive service technology at Central Nine Career Center. They are semifinalists for Harbor Freight Tools for Schools 2018 Prize for Teaching Excellence.

For the second round application for the prize, semifinalists will respond to a series of online expert-led video learning modules designed to solicit their insights and creative ideas about their teaching practices and how to inspire their students to achieve excellence in the skilled trades.

High school FFA wins outstanding chapter

A local high school FFA has been recognized as an outstanding chapter.

The Whiteland FFA chapter has been recognized in the 2018 National Chapter Award Program from the National FFA Organization.

The program recognizes outstanding FFA chapters from throughout the country that actively implement the mission and strategies of the organization. These chapters improve chapter operations using the National Quality FFA Chapter Standards and a program of activities that emphasizes growing leaders, building communities and strengthening agriculture. Chapters are rewarded for providing educational experiences for the entire membership.

All winning chapters will be recognized at the national FFA conference in October in Indianapolis.

High school athletes do community service

High school runners helped feed the needy in Indianapolis.

Members of the Greenwood Christian Academy High School cross country team volunteered at the Gleaner’s Food Bank.

The students stocked pantry shelves, helped families shop, bagged groceries and carried groceries to cars.

The team helped about 125 people in the three and a half hours they volunteered. Participating members were: Zane Stout, Aden Sloan, Andrew Cruse, Drew Graves, Whitney Smith, Anna Subris and Abby Muck.

Library offering scholarship

The Greenwood Public Library will award a scholarship to a high school senior who loves to read.

The Century of Reading Scholarship worth $5,000 is open to seniors attending a high school in Johnson County or a homeschooled student who lives in the county.

This one-time award has been established by the library in honor of its 100 years of service to the community.

The college scholarship will be awarded to one local senior who reads 50 books from a select list, and also demonstrates insight and creativity in an essay about how reading has impacted and inspired their future.

Applications are due March 1 from the online application form at www.greenwoodlibrary.us/scholarship. No paper applications will be accepted.

Republicans offering statehouse internship

Indiana House Republicans are accepting internship applications for the 2019 legislative session, which begins in January.

State Reps. Woody Burton (R-Whiteland), Dave Frizzell (R-Indianapolis) and John Young (R-Franklin) invite local college and graduate students as well as recent graduates to apply for an internship before Oct. 31.

Internship positions are open to college sophomores, juniors and seniors, graduate students, and recent graduates of all majors. Students can apply for internships in a variety of areas, focusing on legislative, communications and media relations, policy or fiscal policy.

Positions are full time and hours are Monday through Friday from January through April. Interns receive $750 in bi-weekly pay and can earn college credit and are eligible to apply for a $3,000 scholarship.
