Edinburgh football edged by Pacers

A back-and-forth battled ensued between the Edinburgh and Switzerland County football teams on Friday.

It was the Pacers that had the final say.

The Lancers led for much of the second half, but two touchdowns by the Pacers in the fourth quarter gave Edinburgh the 33-32 loss.

The Lancers drop to 0-4 on the season.

Edinburgh was first to get on the scoreboard. The Lancers were forced to punt early, but a roughing the kicker penalty extended the drive. The Lancers took advantage of the second chance, getting a 39-yard touchdown run from Bryce Burton and an Austin Streeval run for the two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead.

With Edinburgh pinned deep on its next possession, a fumble occurred on the snap and the Switzerland County recovered. The Pacers took advantage when Tre Batchelor ran it in for the two-yard touchdown to make it 8-6.

Switzerland County then took the lead for the first time at 13-8 when Dathan Brown caught an 11-yard pass from quarterback Damion Courter. After a three-and-out from Edinburgh, the Pacers then extended the lead on the ensuing possession when Courter found Cade Rider for the 51-yard touchdown reception to make it 20-8 with 3:55 left in the first half.

Edinburgh then came charging back just before the half. Darius Bennett caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Tyson Sackman to make it 20-14. Switzerland County was threatening to score another touchdown in the closing seconds, but Collin Richardson made the interception, his second of the half, and ran it back from 95 yards out to tie the score at 20-20 with 7.8 seconds left.

After the Pacers punted on their first third-quarter possession, Burton was stopped just short of the goal line on a 30-yard run. Sackman then called his own number for the 1-yard quarterback draw to retake the lead, 26-20. The Pacers then tied the game at 26-26 on a 5-yard run by Dominic Klem with 10:23 left in regulation.

On the ensuing possession, Edinburgh was forced to punt and Rider ran it back 40 yards for the touchdown to put the Pacers ahead 33-26.

Edinburgh was then forced to punt again but caught a major break, as Switzerland County bobbled the catch off the punt and the Lancers recovered. Edinburgh took advantage of the opportunity when Burton ran for the 1-yard touchdown, but the extra-point attempt failed with 4:39 left in the game. The Pacers were able to chew up some clock and then thwart a last-second drive by the Lancers.
