High school football: Week 4 previews

Franklin (2-1) at Whiteland (2-1)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Radio: KORN Country (100.3 FM)

Recent history: The Warriors have won the last 20 meetings dating back to a 2003 Franklin victory, including a narrow 24-21 win last season.

Last week: Franklin beat Perry Meridian, 38-21; Whiteland lost to Decatur Central, 28-14

Sagarin ratings: Franklin 51.88 (140th), Whiteland 74.87 (39th)

Players to watch: Franklin — QB Drew Byerly, WR Cory Richards, LB Clayton Coll, LB Brendan Couch, DB/KR Tyce Miller; Whiteland — QB Iyan Pelfree, RB Jake Perry, DL Alex Reed, LB Jacob Schultz, DB Trevor Larence

What to look for: Both of these teams have come out hot this season, and a 3-1 start would be huge for either. The deciding factor might be which defense holds up best — the Grizzly Cubs’ passing game has been rolling the past two weeks, while the Warriors are as strong as ever on the ground. In what could become a shootout, any stop could prove to be a critical one.

Center Grove (1-2) at Ben Davis (2-1)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Webcast: centergrovefootball.com

Recent history: The Trojans had won three straight in the series before the Giants rolled to a 40-7 victory last season.

Last week: Center Grove beat Carmel, 17-7; Ben Davis beat Pike, 40-19

Sagarin ratings: Center Grove 90.92 (11th), Ben Davis 102.41 (third)

Players to watch: Center Grove — QB Jackson Moore, RB Carson Steele, WR Jacob Keith, DL Lucas Hunter, DB Chris Martin; Ben Davis — QB Trent Gipson, RB Delbert Mimms III, WR Dominic Day, OL Dawand Jones, DL Rayvion Tharpe

What to look for: The Giants aren’t quite the dominating juggernaut they were a year ago, but they’ve still got an extremely formidable offense averaging more than 40 points. For the Trojans to keep their positive momentum rolling, they’ll need to avoid mistakes and get another superb defensive effort, just as they did last week.

Greenwood (1-2) at Mooresville (3-0)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Recent history: The Woodmen have won 10 in a row, including sectional victories in each of the past two seasons. Greenwood took both 2017 meetings (51-21 and 59-32).

Last week: Greenwood lost to Martinsville, 29-8; Mooresville beat Plainfield, 52-42

Sagarin ratings: Greenwood 59.80 (100th), Mooresville 68.73 (69th)

Players to watch: Greenwood — QB Oliver Rau, RB Nick Willham, WR Isaiah Drew, LB Dillon Cloyd, LB Bryce Taylor; Mooresville — QB Karson Goodman, RB James Mabry, WR Jon Eineman, WR Brayden Evans, DB Gavin Evans

What to look for: The Pioneers have been putting up some prolific offensive numbers thus far and could be difficult to slow down. It’ll be important for Rau and the Woodmen to be able to sustain and finish drives in what figures to be a fairly high-scoring affair. If Willham can run effectively and slow the game down, that could tilt things in Greenwood’s favor.

Brown County (1-2) at Indian Creek (1-2)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Recent history: The Braves have won 15 straight in the series, taking the last five by a combined 259-27 margin (52-7 last year).

Last week: Brown County lost at Cascade, 42-20; Indian Creek beat Owen Valley, 59-8

Sagarin ratings: Brown County 22.63 (269th), Indian Creek 53.37 (131st)

Players to watch: Brown County — QB Noah Carter, RB/DE Hunter Funkhouser, WR/DB Griffin Kelly, OL/DL Leyton Mosier, OL/LB Christian Fouts; Indian Creek — QB/WR Isaiah Lacey, RB Avery Welch, OL/DL Cameron Elmore, OL/DL Kenny Edwards, LB Bryce Smith

What to look for: The Braves have dominated the WIC’s Eastern Division since joining the league in 2016, but they’ve had the Eagles under their thumb for longer than that. This hasn’t been a particularly compelling rivalry for a while now, and there’s little reason to expect otherwise this year. Indian Creek should be able to get its younger players some more varsity experience.

Switzerland County (1-2) at Edinburgh (0-3)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Recent history: Edinburgh won a four-OT thriller in 2016, but the Pacers have taken the last two meetings, including a 44-6 romp last season.

Last week: Switzerland County lost at Carroll County (Kentucky), 47-7; Edinburgh lost to Oldenburg Academy, 40-22

Sagarin ratings: Switzerland County 17.57 (286th), Edinburgh minus-5.74 (320th)

Players to watch: Switzerland County — QB Damion Couter, RB/LB Logan Skaggs, WR Cade Rider, DL Zach Howlett, LB Hunter Records; Edinburgh — QB Tyson Sackman, RB/LB Bryce Burton, WR/LB Austin Streeval, WR/DB Hunter Dean, OL/DL Ethan Armel

What to look for: The Pacers, who played their first three games of the year against Kentucky teams, have struggled offensively thus far; Edinburgh, meanwhile, has had a difficult time stopping anyone. Which side will be able to break through? And can the Lancers build on the offensive momentum they started generating last week?

Roncalli (0-3) at Columbus North (3-0)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Webcast: rebelmedianetwork.com

Recent history: This will be the first meeting since 1994, when the eventual state champion Rebels picked up a 24-6 victory.

Last week: Roncalli lost to Bishop Chatard, 21-13; Columbus North beat Southport, 41-36

Sagarin ratings: Roncalli 74.89 (38th), Columbus North 87.96 (16th)

Players to watch: Roncalli — QB Cole Beckman, RB Elijah Mahan, WR Luke Dill, DL John Harris, DB Jacob Denney; Columbus North — QB Trenton Kelley, RB Blake Huffman, OL Noah Algee, TE/DE Mitchel Collier, LB Tay Wells

What to look for: The Bull Dogs are coming off of a close win over the same Southport team that edged Roncalli in Week 1, and their potent offense should pose a challenge for the Rebels. In order to hang, Roncalli will need to get its offense going after producing just one scoring drive in each of the past two weeks.
