County bringing in new families

With more homes being built and schools in demand, Johnson County continues to grow by bringing in new families.

As of 2016, 15 percent of the county’s population were residents who moved into Johnson County from outside of the county, state and nation over the past year, according to U.S. Census data.

The majority of those people moved in from another county in the state, according to the data.

Of local communities, Bargersville has the highest percent of residents who moved from a different part of the state. Of the 6,710 people who live in Bargersville, 615 — or 9 percent — had moved from a different county within Indiana, according to the data.

“People moving to Johnson County usually ask for Greenwood, Franklin or Center Grove schools. They don’t typically think about some of the smaller towns,” area realtor Ron Rose said.

But with new home construction booming in Bargersville, where hundreds of new homes are planned in the coming years, the town is becoming much more well-known to buyers, Rose said. Students also go to Center Grove schools, which is also in high demand, real estate agents have said.

Of the residents who have moved to Johnson County from another part of the state, typically most are from Marion County, according to IRS migration data.

Some other top Indiana counties contributing to Johnson County’s growth are: Bartholomew, Morgan and Shelby counties, according to the data.

But residents do move out of the county each year, too.

Most people who leave Johnson County do so for homes in Marion County, Bartholomew County, Morgan County or Hendricks County, according to the data.

Of the 826 Johnson County residents who moved to a different state, 437 of them moved to the south.
