City council member resigns, police search business

A Greenwood City Council member who has been the subject of a police investigation has resigned from his elected position, the same week police searched his business property.

Brent Corey informed the Johnson County Republican Party in a letter that he was resigning from the city council, where he has served for 10 years. He told the party his resignation was necessary because he no longer lives in the city.

The Indiana State Police began an investigation into Corey in early July, but the details of the investigation and any allegations have not been released.

Last week, police searched his business property, but Corey’s attorney, Mike Kyle, said he had not learned the details of the search. Corey owns Sizemore Insurance Agency in Greenwood.

Corey has not been arrested or charged. The investigation began when Greenwood police received a criminal complaint on June 28. Greenwood police asked state police to investigate due to Corey’s position on the city council, to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest.

Corey, a Republican, has served on the city council for 10 years, and was most recently re-elected to a third term in 2015. He is an at-large member, meaning he represents the entire city, rather than being elected in a specific district. As a member of the city council, Corey also serves on the city’s plan commission.

Corey had no additional statement to make about his resignation from the city council, Kyle said.

His seat will be on the ballot in 2019, but the Greenwood-area Republicans will select a person to fill his vacancy until then.

Party Chairwoman Beth Boyce is planning a caucus on Sept. 18 to replace Corey, which follows a caucus set for Sept. 6 to replace city council member Chuck Landon, who recently died.

The vacancies leave two at-large openings on the nine-member city council. More than 50 precinct committee members will gather to vote on the replacements.
