Multiple residents report thefts from vehicles

A gun, cash and a key card for a central Indiana school were stolen from vehicles in Bargersville this weekend.

At least 10 residents woke up Sunday morning to find their vehicles had been rummaged through, and items were missing, according to police reports.

The thefts were reported in neighborhoods off Smokey Road Road, just west of State Road 135.

Police have said that thefts from vehicles are becoming more common and have responded to dozens of reports already this summer. They have reminded residents to be cautious and lock their vehicles and take items inside.

Victims of the most recent thefts said they had left their vehicles unlocked or forgotten to lock them, according to the police reports.

The thief or thieves made off with at least $400 in cash from the vehicles, and also stole a handgun, a checkbook and a key card and flash drive from a resident who works at Martinsville High School, according to the reports. Other vehicles were rummaged through, but nothing was found to be missing. One resident had an apron and key stolen, but the items were found in a nearby yard, the report said.

Police are investigating and have found surveillance video of the thief, according to the reports.

One resident also reported hearing someone yell and a vehicle drive away late Saturday or early Sunday, the report said.

Thefts were reported in the 3400 block of Smokey Row Road and on Briar Patch Road, which are both on the north side of the road.

Multiple thefts were reported in the Reserve at Somerset and the Manor at Somerset neighborhoods, located on the south side of Smokey Row Road. Thefts were reported on Tecumseh Way, Cheyenne Court, Autumn Run, Springs Way Court and Sunnyvalle Drive, according to the reports.
