Police investigating Whiteland shooting

One man has been arrested and another is in the hospital after an argument between neighbors led to a shooting in a Whiteland apartment complex.

Francisco J. Garabay, 55, of Whiteland, was arrested on an attempted murder charge after the shooting early Friday morning.

Just before 1 a.m., police were called to Willow Pointe Apartments, off Front Street, on the north side of Whiteland, on a report of a person shot.

When officers arrived, they found a chaotic scene, with multiple people yelling and a man with a rifle, Whiteland Police Chief Rick Shipp said.

Officers were able to get the gun from the man, later identified as Garabay, and then went inside one of the apartments, and found a man on the floor who had been shot, Shipp said. The man, who police have not identified, was taken to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital and underwent surgery, Shipp said.

Investigators began speaking to witnesses and learned both men had been with a group of people watching football inside the apartment complex and drinking alcohol, Shipp said.

Garabay and the other man, who also lives in the apartment complex, had gotten into a scuffle, Shipp said.

Garabay went back to his apartment, got his gun, came outside and shot at the other man, Shipp said. Police suspected four to six shots were fired.

The quick response from multiple police departments, including New Whiteland and Whiteland police, helped control the chaotic scene. And the quick response from emergency workers likely saved the victim’s life, Shipp said. Franklin Police Department and Johnson County Sheriff’s Office also assisted, Whiteland Town Manager Norm Gabehart said.

Police continue investigating, including speaking to multiple witnesses, comparing their statements and gathering evidence, Shipp said.

Garabay, 602 Willow Drive, was arrested and taken to Johnson County jail, where he is being held without bond.
