Man arrested with stolen vehicle

A man who was driving a stolen car was tasered and arrested after he ran from officers at a Greenwood gas station

William Balay, 23, Avon, was arrested on charges of auto theft, theft, possession of methamphetamine, resisting law enforcement, carrying an unlawful handgun, possession of a restricted drug injection device, possession of legend drugs, giving a false identity statement and a warrant.

A Johnson County Sheriff’s Office deputy became suspicious of a group of people around a car outside a gas station in the 600 block of South State Road 135, ran the license plate on the vehicle and found it was not registered to the car he was seeing, the report states.

The deputy spoke with Balay, who appeared nervous, and when the deputy asked Balay to get out of the vehicle, he took off running. The deputy chased after Balay and used his Taser to stop him, the report said.

He ran through the parking lot and onto private property where the officer tasered and detained him. He also had a warrant out of Marion County for resisting law enforcement.

Balay, 6268 Barberry Drive, was taken to the Johnson County jail, where he was held without bond.
