No charge filed in neglect arrest

A woman arrested on a neglect charge earlier this month is not being criminally charged in the case, prosecutors said.

Ashley Crandall, 28, of Greenwood, was arrested earlier this month after a neighbor called police to report that Crandall’s 8-year-old daughter had been playing outside alone for hours.

When officers went to Crandall’s home, they found her passed out on the floor and a test showed she had a blood-alcohol content of .06 percent.

After review by the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office, a criminal charge is not being filed, deputy prosecutor Ryan Bland said.

In order to meet the requirements of the law for a neglect charge, a child’s life must be in danger, Bland said.

In this case, that element was not met, Bland said. Other children are often out riding bikes in their neighborhood at that same age, he said.

Crandall had told police that she always lets her daughter ride her bike around the neighborhood and that her daughter has her phone number and is supposed to call if she enters anyone’s home.
