Teens compete to shear, groom sheep fastest

With their lambs standing on raised platforms, four 4-H’ers worked at a quick pace to groom and shear their sheep.

With only an hour to work, they had to be efficient to complete the grooming as quickly as possible to win Monday’s competition.

That included brushing and combing wool before carefully shaving it off almost every area except just above their hooves, trimming hooves, using wet wipes to clean ears and noses and final touches of hair spray to keep their trimmed down coat looking nice.

Korbin Heminger, 17, of Trafalgar, compared grooming and shearing a lamb to riding a bike. The task he’s done hundreds of times over the past 10 years comes with practice and becomes natural once you know how to do it, he said.

The lamb Heminger was working on, which had been born in February, was only being sheared for the second time. While younger animals are usually nervous the first couple of times, this one handled it without any issues, he said. He plans to show the lamb later this week in a couple of competitions, Heminger said.
