Bicyclist struck crossing U.S. 31

A Franklin man was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle while trying to bike across U.S. 31.

Joshua Ford, 22, was trying to cross the highway south of Franklin around 6:30 a.m. Thursday on a bicycle and was struck by a truck driven by Sherri Simpson, 53, of Edinburgh, a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report said.

A medical helicopter was called due to Ford’s severe injuries, Sheriff Doug Cox said. Ford was taken to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital. His condition was not available Thursday afternoon.

Simpson told police that she was going north on U.S. 31 in the left lane and that the bicyclist came across the highway from the east, and she had no time to stop, the report said. A witness told police that the Ford had ridden the bicycle at a fast speed down a hill and that it appeared like he was unable to stop before going across the highway, the report said.

Simpson stopped after the crash and was cooperative with police. Investigators had her give a blood sample, which is typical in serious accident investigations, but have no reason to suspect that she was impaired, Cox said.

The accident happened near the Hilltop Motel in the Amity area, which is about halfway between Franklin and Edinburgh, and caused U.S. 31 to be closed for more than an hour on Thursday morning.
