U.S. 31 south of Franklin reopens after accident

Both directions of U.S. 31 have reopened after an accident between a bicycle and a truck  closed the highway south of Franklin.

A bicyclist was trying to cross the highway and was struck by a truck. A medical helicopter was called due to the bicyclist’s severe injuries, Sheriff Doug Cox said. The bicyclist was taken to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital.

The truck driver stopped and was cooperative with police. Investigators had the driver give a blood sample, which is typical in serious accident investigations, but have no reason to suspect the driver was impaired, Cox said.

The accident happened around 6:30 a.m. near the Hilltop Motel in the Amity area, which is about half way between Franklin and Edinburgh.

Both directions of travel on U.S. 31 were closed this morning, the sheriff said.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the accident.
