Put off filling your tank, mowing today

Daily Journal staff reports

The state is asking people to avoid going through the drive-thru, filling their tank and mowing their yard today.

Today and Sunday have been deemed Air Quality Action Days due to forecasted high levels of ozone. Ozone is formed when sunlight and hot weather bake vehicle exhaust, factory emissions and gasoline vapors and is a lung irritant that can cause coughing and breathing difficulties.

You can reduce ozone by walking or carpooling, instead of driving, avoiding using the drive-thru and combining errands into one trip, putting off refilling your tank or mowing your lawn until after 7 p.m., turning off your engine after idling for 30 seconds and conserving energy by turning off lights and turning the thermostat to 75 degrees, according to a news release.

Anyone sensitive to changes in air quality, including children, the elderly and anyone with heart or lung conditions, should reduce or avoid exertion and heavy work outdoors, the release said.
