2 local students win Army awards

Two students from Greenwood were given awards for their academic and athletic abilities.

Bryn-Gentry White and Nick Young from Greenwood Community High School were recently awarded the U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar/Athlete Award.

The award is presented annually by the U.S. Army Reserve to high school students who have shown outstanding ability in both academics and athletics.

Young played football and ran track and White was the Senior Class and Student Body President, member of National Honor Society, 4-year Student Council, 4-year Varsity Cheerleader and on the track team. Bryn-Gentry spent hundreds of hours volunteering for Special Olympics Johnson County and spent her final semester coaching the Special Olympics Johnson County Cheerleaders.

2 local students named media scholars

The Media School at Indiana University in Bloomington has named local students to honors groups.

Sixteen Ernie Pyle Scholars will pursue a bachelor of arts in journalism, while 16 Media Scholars will pursue either a bachelor of arts in media or a bachelor of science in game design.

Mitchell Black of Center Grove High School and David Schrader of Roncalli High School were named media scholars.

Roncalli student wins art competition

A Roncalli High School senior has won a statewide art competition.

Rachel Knierman has won the Congressional Art Competition for 2018 as a representative of Indiana.

Knierman and her parents will be flown to Washington D.C. to attend a reception honoring student artists representing all 50 states. Her artwork will hang in the rotunda of the United States Capitol building for one year.

Her winning entry entitled “Fireflies” pays homage to the 2018 induction of the firefly as Indiana’s state insect and the Hoosier-produced Ball jar.

Students earn degrees in college program

Center Grove High School honored 122 seniors for earning college degrees or certificates through the school’s Early College program.

Through the program, students can take courses that earn credit toward both high school and college at the same time.

The following 37 seniors received an associate’s degree in general studies from Vincennes University, along with their high school diploma:
