Catching up to her classmates

A flexible learning environment allowed one student to graduate a year ahead of schedule and begin pursing her dreams of working as an paramedic.

Ever since Morgan Brissey, 18, was held back in first grade, she’s wanted to have the opportunity to catch up academically with her friends so that she could finish high school at the same time, she said

Spending her last year of high school at Clark Pleasant Academy gave her a chance to earn more than double the amount of credits a student would typically in a school year, meaning that she’ll have her high school diploma in the next month.

The academy allowed Brissey to be able to split her time between morning work at Central Nine Career Center, where she has been studying to become an emergency medical technician, and afternoon classes at the academy.

But that isn’t typically the end of her day.

Once her afternoon classes are done, she’ll head off for a shift of work at a shooting range in Greenwood. She has also spent the past year as a cadet with the Green Township Fire Department, near her home in Martinsville. Once she passes the tests to become certified as an EMT, her goal is to work for the department, Brissey said.

“I love helping people, and I want to be able to care for them when they are going through a bad time,” she said.

As part of her EMT training, she’s gone along on ambulance and spent time in the emergency room at Eskenazi Hospital.

As a student, she is limited in what work she can do, but just being able to get an up-close look at how doctors and nurses work solidified her desire to become involved in the medical field, Brissey said.

Eventually, her goal is to become a paramedic, and she plans to attend Ivy Tech Community College and Indiana University to get her nursing degree.
