Man charged in Trafalgar shooting

A Trafalgar man was charged with a felony after his gun went off during a fight, injuring his wife and another man.

Kevin W. Farley, 38, was charged with criminal recklessness after the incident on April 27.

Police said Farley had a shotgun and struggled with another man and the gun went off, shooting his wife, Casey Farley, and the other man, Jared Francis, both in the stomach. This week, Casey Farley remained in the hospital in fair condition. No information on Francis’ condition was available, according to an Indiana University Health spokesperson.

Kevin Farley declined to answer investigators’ questions about the incident, but told them he was defending himself and had been punched in the face by Francis, according to court records.

The incident started when Francis confronted Kevin Farley outside a woman’s home.

Kevin Farley had previously dated the woman, and the woman was concerned about him being outside her home. Francis, who is currently dating the woman, confronted Kevin Farley and the two exchanged words, and Kevin Farley left, according to court records.

Francis and the woman then drove to Kevin Farley’s home in the 200 block of Raymond Avenue and knocked on the door. No one answered, and they left, but then saw Kevin Farley standing outside, making a motion at Francis, court records said.

Francis got out of the car before it had fully stopped to confront Kevin Farley. Kevin Farley pulled out a shotgun, and Francis grabbed the gun and punched Kevin Farley. The gun went off, striking both Francis and Casey Farley, who was nearby, in the stomach, court records said.

The area where the incident happened is a residential area, and multiple people were nearby. Kevin Farley also brought the gun outside to confront Francis, causing his own wife to be shot, court records said.

Kevin Farley could face up to two-and-a-half years in prison for the level 6 felony.
