Golf

Shepherd wins USGA qualifier

Erica Shepherd teamed with Megan Furtney of Chicago to easily win the final qualifier for the USGA U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball tournament at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tennessee, on Wednesday.

Shepherd and Furtney, who eventually will be teammates at Duke, combined to shoot a blistering 61, six strokes ahead of any other pair. The two advance to the main tournament, which takes place April 28 to May 2 at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, California.

Trojans win season opener

Top-ranked Center Grove teed off its season by defeating Plainfield 155 to 170 on Wednesday.

Noah Gillard and Sam Jean paced the Trojans with rounds of 38. Logan Anderson shot a 39 and Peyton Short added a 40.

Baseball

Warriors rout Plainfield

Braden Reed hit a home run and had four RBIs, leading Whiteland to a 13-3 rout of Plainfield in Mid-State Conference action Wednesday.

Luke Helton added a two-run double for the Warriors (4-2, 2-0). Riley McMahon was the winning pitcher, yielding two earned runs in the five-inning contest.

Grizzly Cubs outslug Falcons

Luke Miles and George Admire knocked in three runs apiece as Franklin powered its way past Perry Meridian 11-7 on Wednesday.

Admire had three hits for the Grizzly Cubs (4-3), while Miles hit a three-run homer in the victory.

Softball

Grizzly Cubs get walk-off win

Baylee Parker had three hits, including a walk-off home run, and Izzy Harrison struck out 14 batters as Franklin eked out a 3-2 win against Speedway on Wednesday.

Bostyn Parkhurst added two hits for the Grizzly Cubs (2-5).

Girls tennis

Woodmen earn first victory

Greenwood broke into the win column by edging Perry Meridian 3-2 on Wednesday. Emily Chatham earned a point at No 2 singles for the Woodmen (1-3).

Alyssa Roscoe and Maecee Terhune won at No. 1 doubles, with Brittney Mandaback and Ally Hussung claiming a win at No. 2.

Warriors edged by Cardinals

Whiteland came up just short against Southport on Wednesday 3-2. Sarah Scott was a three-set winner at No. 1 singles for the Warriors (1-1), while Reese Johnson and Bri Harwell picked up a point at No. 1 doubles.

Track and field

Grizzly Cub boys victorious

Double individual winners Nick Riggles and Riley McCann helped Franklin’s boys to a 75-57 victory against Martinsville on Tuesday.

Riggles won both hurdles races, while Riley McCann was first in both the 100 and 200 meters. Also earning first-place finishes for the Grizzly Cubs were Drew Hargis (800), Andrew Bixler (1,600), Will Tucker (3,200) and Matt Frazier (pole vault).

Girls basketball

Former Franklin coach honored

Walt Raines, who spent 27 years as the girls basketball coach at Franklin, will be one of three recipients of the Virgil Sweet Awards at the 2018 Indiana Basketball Coaches Association annual clinic later this month.

Raines is being honored along with former Columbia City and Fort Wayne Canterbury girls coach Wayne Kreiger and Terry Downham of Kokomo.

Winner of 339 games during his tenure at the high school, Raines guided the Grizzly Cubs to a state runner-up finish in 1998 and won five sectionals and two regionals. He still directs the Indy Girls Hoop League, which he founded in 2008.

Franklin College

Softball splits with HCAC leader

After taking a tough 1-0 loss in the opening game of a Tuesday doubleheader with HCAC leader Transylvania, Franklin College stormed back for a 10-0 victory in the nightcap.

Olivia Paszek took her first loss of the season in the first game despite tossing a three-hitter and striking out 14 without a walk. The Grizzlies (17-5, 4-2) rebounded in Game 2, getting four RBI hits from Alexis Tarver to help support Kayla Selzer, who threw her first career shutout.
