SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake County has filed a lawsuit against pharmaceutical companies and medical professionals that it claims have contributed to the opioid addiction crisis seen countywide.

The Deseret News reports the county filed the lawsuit in the 3rd District Court on Tuesday.

The lawsuit claims that the uptick in opioid addiction was caused by a “callously deceptive marketing scheme” by some opioid manufacturers and was perpetuated by doctors they support.

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said Tuesday that the repercussions of those acts have overburdened the county’s jails, public health facilities and treatment centers.

Gill estimates that the county could seek millions of dollars in damages that will help pay for efforts to fight addiction.

Summit and Tooele counties have also filed similar lawsuits.
