WOONSOCKET, R.I. — Authorities say a 3-year-old Rhode Island boy drowned in about 18 inches of water on top of a neighbor’s covered pool.

The boy was found Monday afternoon after disappearing from his home in Woonsocket. Police say he had been outside with his father, who was working on a car.

Police Chief Thomas F. Oates III tells The Woonsocket Call the boy had been missing for about 35 minutes when police were called. It took about 10 to 15 minutes for emergency responders to find him in the neighbor’s pool.

It’s unclear how long he had been in the water.

CPR efforts at the scene were unsuccessful, and the boy was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
