ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Bernalillo County Sheriff’s officials say a man has been fatally stabbed outside a supermarket in southwest Albuquerque and a suspect is in custody.

They say deputies responded to the scene around 3 p.m. Saturday and found 48-year-old Daniel Sandoval on the ground near the entrance of the store with a stab wound.

Authorities say Sandoval later died at the scene.

Sheriff’s officials say 27-year-old Lucas Herron has been arrested on suspicion of murder and tampering with evidence.

They say Sandoval and Herron were in an altercation inside the supermarket and Sandoval challenged him to fight in the parking lot.

Authorities say Herron argued with Sandoval and then allegedly stabbed him once in the chest before fleeing the scene.

It was unclear Sunday if Herron has a lawyer yet.
