FOND DU LAC, Wis. — A judge has moved commitment proceedings for a man dubbed the “Halloween Killer” from Fond du Lac County to Dane County.

Gerald Turner was sentenced to more than 38 years in prison for the death of 9-year-old Lisa Ann French, who was killed on Halloween night in Fond du Lac in 1973. Authorities say she died of shock after Turner raped her.

The 68-year-old Turner’s scheduled release date was Feb. 1, but authorities are trying to get him committed to a secure mental health facility as sexually dangerous.

Defense attorney Robert William Peterson persuaded Judge Robert Wirtz on Friday the case should be heard in Dane County because Turner was living in Madison when authorities revoked his parole in 2003 for child pornography.

The state plans to appeal the change-of-venue.
