PORTLAND, Ore. — A 28-year-old Oregon man has been sentenced to nearly 18 years in prison for holding two women hostage on separate occasions.

KATU-TV reports that the judge who sentenced Justin Hatchell on Thursday said they had never heard of this “level of brutality” in 36 years of practicing law.

Hatchell is accused of kidnapping, raping and holding two former girlfriends. The first incident was in July 2016, when a woman said she was held captive in a Portland home for three weeks before escaping. The woman’s mother says her daughter was beaten and raped multiple times.

Hatchell is accused of taking another woman hostage in March 2017. In that incident, the woman was beaten so violently that she has permanent nerve damage to her face.
