CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Prosecutors say officers who shot and killed a homicide suspect at a police headquarters in North Carolina will not face charges.
Mecklenburg County District Attorney Spencer Merriweather said in a news release that no charges will be filed against two police officers and two probation officers who returned fire when 23-year-old Jonathan Bennett fired at officers Jan. 11.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney said Bennett ambushed officers when he pulled into the parking lot and opened fire.
One officer was shot in the leg.
Bennett died at a Charlotte hospital.
Police had said Bennett was the suspect in the shooting death of his girlfriend, 24-year-old Brittany White earlier that day.
Seven police officers and four probation officers were in the parking lot when the shooting began.
