Flu restrictions to end soon at local hospitals

Restrictions on hospital visitors are being lifted as this year’s flu season begins to wind down.

For the past three-and-a-half months, local hospitals have been restricting visitors to immediate family and people other than 18 and barring any visitors with any cold or flu symptoms.

Franciscan Health first put visitor restrictions in place Dec. 29, when a surge in flu cases began in central Indiana, a news release from the hospital said. Those restrictions will end Monday, as the number of flu cases has dropped significantly, the release said.

Restrictions will remain in place for visitors to the neonatal intensive care unit in Indianapolis, including for people with respiratory illnesses or related viruses, the release said.

Community Hospital South, which started its visitor restrictions Jan. 8, is considering ending those restriction as early as Monday after officials meet with the Marion County Health Department, spokesperson Kris Kirschner said.
