Cocaine found on man in bar fight

A Franklin police officer looking for a man involved in a fight spotted a suspected bag of drugs in the man’s jacket, which led to the discovery of felony amounts of cocaine.

Robert H. Masengale, 55, of Franklin, was arrested on a felony charge of possession of cocaine and a misdemeanor charge of public intoxication.

Police were initially called to a Franklin bar just after 2 a.m. Saturday on the report of a fight, and police found the suspect walking on Jefferson Street.

A police officer who noticed the baggie sticking out of Masengale’s jacket asked what it was, and Masengale responded “you got me” and started pulling out another baggie with marijuana in it, a Franklin police report said.

He told police he had just purchased marijuana, and started pulling more baggies out of his pockets, the report said. Police found baggies of suspected cocaine.

Masengale told police that the baggies did contain cocaine, and talked about his purchasing and selling of cocaine, including prices and the product, the report said. Police found about 11 grams of cocaine on him, the report said.

Masengale, of 701 Yandes St., was taken to the Johnson County jail and held on $4,300 bond.
