Burton returns as Edinburgh baseball coach

After he became Edinburgh’s head football coach last year, Jason Burton decided to take some time off from coaching the Lancers’ baseball team.

That time off was considerably shorter than he originally planned.

Burton, who helped guide Edinburgh to a sectional championship last spring before stepping down in October, returned to the job without having missed a single game.

Greg Mose, a former football and baseball assistant at the school who had been named to replace Burton in the dugout last November, recently accepted the head football coaching job at Southern Wells.

Though Burton originally had envisioned taking a season or two off from coaching baseball, he was happy to step in earlier to fill the void.

“It wasn’t really a big process to it,” he said. “We all kind of planned on me taking back over eventually anyway.”

Edinburgh returns seven starters from a team that went 12-12 and caught fire late, outscoring its Morristown Sectional opponents 25-1 before falling to Indianapolis Lutheran in the regional.

Not surprisingly, Burton is excited about working with that group again.

“It worked out for the best,” Burton said. “The kids that I have coming back to the team are kids I’ve been with for a while, so it’ll be nice to be with them as they finish up their careers here.”
