GREENWOOD, Miss. — A state agency has denied financing for a plan to build an affordable housing development in the Mississippi Delta.

The Greenwood Commonwealth reports that the denial by the Mississippi Home Corp. came after residents had protested the plan.

Rowanoak Development had sought to build the housing on the site of a former stockyard in Greenwood owned by Leflore County.

In a letter to supervisors, Rowanoak wrote that the state agency denied a waiver of a requirement that the development contain blighted residential or commercial structures.

Supervisors voted to revoke the company’s option to buy the property.

Leflore County Supervisor Robert Moore, who represents the area, says that he would like to instead convert the site into a veterans’ center. Moore says his constituents were “solidly against” the housing plan.
