BELVIDERE, N.J. — Prosecutors say a teenage girl in New Jersey has been charged with making a false abduction report.

The Warren County prosecutor’s office says the 17-year-old told police in Hackettstown Township on March 1 that she had been abducted by an unknown male and released a short time later.

Authorities said “a significant amount of resources were expended” over the next week during an investigation that determined that the allegation was false.

The teenager was arrested Friday and charged with providing a false report to law enforcement, a fourth-degree crime. Officials say she could be incarcerated for a year at a juvenile facility.
