College update – March 10

Will Smithey knocked in four runs during the University of Indianapolis baseball team’s recent two wins against Oakland City. The sophomore catcher had a triple in one of the games, while outfielder Devon Hensley stepped up with a double. Both players are Center Grove High School graduates.

CENTER GROVE

Lipscomb defeated USC Upstate 95-53 in women’s basketball with point guard Lauren Rau contributing four points, three assists and two steals to the win in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament. The Bison were eliminated in the semifinals by top-seeded Florida Gulf Coast 105-55, with Rau providing two rebounds and two assists.

Indiana State’s 69-56 loss to Missouri State included four points and an assist from junior Regan Wentland.

Purdue softball player Mallory Baker went 3 for 8 at the plate in the Boilermakers’ final three games of the LSU Tiger Classic. Included were two losses to Illinois State and one to the host Tigers.

Sophomore Maddie London had three RBIs for Black Hills State (South Dakota) softball in the team’s two-game sweep of Colorado State-Pueblo.

Franklin College softball improved to 8-0, winning all six games on its trip to Clermont, Florida. Freshman outfielder Lexi Gaffney played a big role in the Grizzlies’ success, scoring a total of three runs and stealing two bases.

In IUPUI’s five games at the Louisville tournament, sophomore second baseman Mandy Dallas went 7 for 16 at the plate with two runs and two more batted in. Teammate Delainey Turner was 5 for 11, while Maddie Keeley produced five hits of her own.

WHITELAND

Anderson University junior baseball player Branton Sanders is hitting .500 through eight games after going 5 for 7 in a two-game sweep of Olivet. Sanders also scored a total of five runs and drove in eight runs.

Junior leadoff hitter Monica Collins went 8 for 14 at the plate for Franklin College softball in its annual spring break trip to Florida. Collins also scored a total of six runs, drove in six more and had two steals.

Taylor right fielder Jared Adkins had a hit in the Spartans’ 2-1 loss to Lindsey Wilson and two hits and a run batted and a stolen base in a 5-4 defeat of Indiana Tech. In a doubleheader sweep of IU-Kokomo, Adkins chipped in three hits, three RBIs and a steal.

GREENWOOD

IUPUI softball player Megan Overton pitched in three of the Jaguars’ five games at the Louisville tournament. She worked a total of 161/3 innings while striking out 11 and finished 5 for 15 at the plate with a triple and sacrifice fly.

Georgia senior Brittany Gray picked up her eighth and ninth pitching wins of the season as the Bulldogs blanked North Carolina Greensboro and Jacksonville State. Gray pitched a total of 91/3 innings, allowing four hits and striking out 19 without a walk.

Olney Central freshman catcher/designated hitter Damon Maynard collected four hits in the team’s final three games (all wins) in its nine games played at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Maynard also drove in three runs and scored three.

FRANKLIN

Twins Olivia and Grace Paszek played big roles in Franklin College softball winning all six games played on a trip to Clermont, Florida. Grace finished with totals of five hits and six RBIs, while Olivia pitched three of the Grizzlies’ wins. She worked 17 innings overall, permitting eight hits while striking out 22 and walking seven.

Manchester freshman Travis Murr ran a time of 7.05 seconds in the 60-meter dash to qualify for the finals at the UW-Stevens Point last chance meet.
