ST. LOUIS — A man who was shot by an off-duty officer in St. Louis County has been charged with hitting the officer with a cargo van.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 39-year-old Willie Washington was charged Thursday with resisting arrest, assault and stealing. Bond is set at $60,000.

St. Louis County police spokesman Sgt. Shawn McGuire says the non-uniformed officer was shopping Wednesday when he was told people were stealing alcohol and pursued the suspects in a marked patrol vehicle. After the van stopped, the officer began arresting two of its occupants. Washington then is accused of driving into the officer, who fired one shot at Washington’s leg.

Washington was arrested at a hospital where he showed up for treatment. The officer was treated for a concussion and other injuries.
