RALEIGH, N.C. — Snow has closed schools in one North Carolina county.

Snow falling in the mountains around Boone prompted officials to close Watauga County schools on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service said scattered snow showers were expected in the higher elevations in the northwestern North Carolina mountains Wednesday morning. Forecasters say snow is possible in Ashe, Allegheny and Watauga counties.

Forecasters say up to 1 inch (2.5 centimeter) of snow is possible.

On the coast, the North Carolina Transportation Department said N.C. 12 was closed between the Bonner Bridge and Rodanthe on the Outer Banks because the ocean was washing over the road. Crews were working to clear the sand and water Wednesday morning.
