PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A Rhode Island handyman accused of killing a woman in the Providence apartment building where he lived and worked has been charged with murder and mutilation of a dead body.

John Seal was indicted on the charges Friday by a Providence County grand jury.

Authorities allege the 57-year-old Seal killed Judith O’Brien, of North Providence, on or about Aug. 3. The 61-year-old woman was reported missing on Aug. 15 and her body was found in a maintenance closet in Seal’s apartment building in September.

State police told The Providence Journal the last time she was seen was when she left to go see Seal, a friend and convicted drug user, for “medication” for her back pain.

Seal is detained. No one answered the phone Saturday at the public defender’s office.
