College update – February 24

Senior pitcher Brittany Gray led 17th-ranked Georgia to a shutout in softball against Evansville.

The former Greenwood Community High School ace worked all six innings, allowing only one hit while striking out 12 batters to improve her record to 4-0 on the season.

GREENWOOD

Krista Jones, a sophomore for Pittsburgh’s women’s swimming and diving program, finished 18th in platform diving at the Atlantic Coast Conference championship at Greensboro, N.C.

University of Indianapolis pitcher Reid Werner made the start in a 4-3 victory at Kentucky Wesleyan, lasting three innings, allowing four hits and striking out one.

Reserve sophomore guard Holly Hoopingarner had 13 points, five assists and two rebounds in IUPUI’s 91-59 victory at Detroit Mercy. She scored eight points in a 67-60 home loss to Milwaukee.

WHITELAND

Iowa Central Community College freshman Ryder Emberton placed first in the shot put at the Region XI indoor track and field championships and third in the weight throw.

FRANKLIN

Road wins at Wright State-Lake Campus and Spalding resulted in a total of 20 points, six rebounds, seven assists and six steals for St. Mary-of-the-Woods senior point guard Tara Parmer. She has 1,168 career points heading into today’s senior day contest against Robert Morris-Springfield.

Manchester’s Travis Murr placed second in the 60-meter dash in 7.07 seconds at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference indoor track meet at Anderson. He also was runner-up in the 200 in 22.67, breaking his own school indoor standard.

Franklin College junior J.T. Sargent took part in the distance medley relay in the HCAC indoor meet, helping the Grizzlies finish seventh.

CENTER GROVE

Freshman outfielder Hannah Burris is making an immediate impact for University of Indianapolis softball, batting .360 to go along with two steals. A starter in seven of the Greyhounds’ first eight games, Burris has three multi-hit performances.

Sophomore catcher Maddie London picked up a hit for Black Hills State College (South Dakota) in its 19-5 loss to Trevecca Nazarene.

Purdue junior softball player Mallory Baker leads the Boilermakers in RBIs with six after Big Ten/ACC Challenge losses to Virginia Tech and Duke.

University of Indianapolis outfielder Devon Hensley went 1 for 6 at the plate as the Greyhounds’ baseball team opened the season by winning two of three games at Kentucky Wesleyan. Teammate Will Smithey, UIndy’s catcher, had a hit and scored a run in one of the wins.

Franklin College sophomore Reed Sauter ran a time of 1:59.72 to finish third in the 800-meter run at the HCAC track and field meet at Anderson. Sauter earned honorable mention all-conference distinction.

Davidson junior Tori Long placed seventh in the finals of the 400-meter dash at the Atlantic 10 championship at the University of Rhode Island. Long’s time was 1:16.52.

Grant Mason, a freshman at Lips-comb, helped the men’s track fortunes at the Atlantic Sun meet with a fourth-place effort in the 200-meter dash. Mason had a time of 21.91 seconds, and lowered his own personal record in the 60-meter dash in 6.90.

Lipscomb point guard Lauren Rau had seven points and three assists in an 88-52 loss at Florida Gulf Coast. She tallied three points to go along with six assists and four steals in a 20-point setback to Stetson.

Guard Emma LeMasters came off the bench to add six points, four assists and three rebounds to DePauw’s 90-48 romp against Allegheny in the NCAC tournament quarterfinal.

Indiana State junior Regan Wentland chipped in five points and four boards to the Sycamores’ 54-50 defeat of Bradley.

INDIAN CREEK

Indiana Tech guard Dylan Phair finished with 20 points and five rebounds in the team’s 89-69 victory against Siena Heights in the first round of the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament.

Freshman Tim Abel contributed seven points for Cincinnati Christian in its 94-87 men’s basketball loss at Asbury (Kentucky).
