NEWARK, N.J. — A man who fatally shot another man as the victim’s family watched has been sentenced to 55 years in state prison.

Authorities say Luis Mangual was on parole when he shot 39-year-old Jose Alfarao in December 2013.

The shooting occurred in front of Alfaro’s home in Newark after the two men had argued. But authorities have not said what sparked the verbal dispute.

Mangual was convicted last July on murder and weapons charges.

Authorities say Mangual has a long criminal history, including an arson conviction in Puerto Rico.
