Franklin teen charged with felony; said he only intended to harm himself

A man who brought a gun and ammunition onto Franklin Community High School property has been charged with a felony.

Alexander Raines, 19, of Franklin, was charged with possession of a firearm on school property.

Raines told police he never intended to hurt anyone other than himself, according to a Franklin police report. Under the law, it is a felony in Indiana to possess a gun on school property.

On Feb. 5, police were called by Raines’ family. He had left notes for loved ones at his home saying he planned to harm himself.

Police sent out a signal to locate Raines’ phone and found it was near the high school, and they found his car parked in the high school parking lot with a gun case inside.

School officials made the decision to lock down the high school, and police began searching for Raines on the school property and using surveillance video to see that he had not entered the school, the report said. Officers and detectives searched school property and nearby for about 90 minutes in an effort to find him, the report said.

Police found Raines on a trail near the high school, and he was taken to the police station. Shortly after, the high school lockdown was lifted, the report said.

Raines told police that earlier that day he bought a shotgun and ammunition from a firearms dealer, the probable cause affidavit said.

He told police he drove to the high school with letters for three teachers who had meant a lot to him and dropped them off, asking they be put into the teachers’ mailboxes, but police couldn’t determine if he had gone into the high school before or after he purchased the gun.

Raines, 2219 Cedarmill Drive, was arrested this week and released from the Johnson County jail. He could face up to two-and-a-half years in prison for the felony charge.
